此歌最早发表于1833年出版的一本名为《Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern》的节日宗教颂歌的合集。这一古老的颂歌直到今日仍然在英格兰各城镇传唱。

歌曲版本

美国流行乐天后mariah carey曾在94年的圣诞专辑中翻唱这首歌曲,Glee(欢乐合唱团)也翻唱过此歌曲。

张韶涵的《寓言》(副歌部分)借鉴了这首古老的乐曲。

1995年的BBC版《傲慢与偏见》第三集开头,在菲利普姨妈家,由女主角家的第三个女儿弹琴歌唱的。
