soon after 不单独使用。后面要有介词从句。意思是：在，，之后不久，或马上。可根据介词后从句时态来选择主句时态。如
soon after you arrive there ,you will call me .
after a while是一介词短语可以单独使用做句子的时间状语。用过去时。如
he entered the room and after a while a strange sound came from the room.
before long 也是一固定短语，单独用做时间状语，意思是：不久，用于过去时和将来时。如
He graduated from a university last month and before he found a job.
He has just returned from Beijing and before long he will go to Shanghai.

这几个词组其实按汉语意思理解并使用就行：

soon after xxx ＝ xxx的不久以后。xxx可以是人、时间点、事件等的词语或从句。
after a while ＝ 过一小会儿。本身就是个独立状语。等于in a while
before long ＝ 在时间变长以前，就是很快的意思。有点期待的意味。也是独立用的。

关于时态，我想说的是after a while不是必须在过去时的，比如 you'll be sorry after a while 过会儿你就悔了。而before long只要是表达期待，时态就跟上下文走吧。i hope to hear from you before long希望很快就能收到你的信。
