鞭炮的反应以1硫2硝3碳的黑色火药为基础(实际质量配比是:硝酸钾占75%、硫占10%、炭占15%):2KNO3+S+3C =点燃= K2S+N2+3CO2。

蔗糖作为气体发生剂以增加响度,镁则为发光剂。试验可在一坩埚中进行。如用硬纸做成筒壳,将原料填入并用导火索(30%硝酸钾溶液浸过的纸卷)点燃,则为爆竹。将若干小爆竹用导火索连接,即为鞭炮,是现代炸弹的前身。
