史密斯飞船乐队的传奇开始于1970年，不过最早开始于60年代末Steven Tyler和Joe Perry在美国新罕布什尔州Sunapee的一家冰淇淋店第一次相遇。Steven Tyler原名Steven Victor Tallarico，1948年3月26日出生在美国纽约的Yonkers，很小的时候Steven Tyler就开始练习敲鼓，但是随后受到了Yardbirds乐队滚石乐队等人的影响，逐渐成为了演唱者。

真正让史密斯飞船乐队在美国家喻户晓的是他们的突破性的第三张专辑《Toys in the Attic》，在发行之后这张专辑排在了排行榜的第11位，这张专辑完美的结合了商业性和艺术性，成为了摇滚乐历史上最经典的专辑之一。
