本实验是用电解的方法进行测定阿伏伽德罗常数。
如果用两块已知质量的铜片分别作为阴极和阳极,以CuSO₄溶液作电解液进行电解,则在阴极上Cu²⁺ 获得电子后析出金属铜,沉积在铜片上,使得其质量增加;在阳极上等量得金属铜溶解,生成Cu²⁺ 进入溶液,因而铜片的质量减少。发生在阴极和阳极上的反应:
阴极反应:Cu²⁺ +2e═(电解)Cu ;阳极反应:Cu═(电解)Cu²⁺ +2e
阴极反应:二价铜离子得两个电子生成铜(金属单质态);阳极反应:铜(金属单质态)被电解生成铜离子和两个电子。
从理论上讲,阴极上Cu²⁺离子得到的电子数和阳极上Cu失去的电子数应该相等。因此在无副反应的情况下,阴极增加的质量应该等于阳极减少的质量。但往往因铜片不纯,从阳极失去的重量要比阴极增加得质量偏高,所以从阳极失重算的得结果有一定误差,一般从阴极增重的结果较为准确。
需要测量的量包括:电流强度I,通电时间t,阴极增重的质量m.
由于Cu的相对原子质量为64,而摩尔是由¹²C的原子个数来定义的,故Cu的摩尔质量为64g/mol,由实验步骤,可知阴极增重1mol即64g铜时,电量应为2mol。
根据上述分析,可以得到阿伏伽德罗常数的估计值约为32It/me,其中e为单个电子的电量。

伏伽德罗常量(Avogadro constant),旧称阿伏伽德罗常数,为热学常量,符号NA。它的数值为:6.022 141 29 ±0.000 000 27×10²³(2010年CODATA数据)[1] ,一般计算时取6.02×10²³或6.022×10²³。它的正式的定义是0.012千克碳12中包含的碳12的原子的数量。
历史上,将¹²C选为参考物质是因为它的原子量可以测量得相当精确。阿伏伽德罗常量因意大利化学家阿莫迪欧·阿伏伽德罗(Amedeo Avogadro,1776~1856)得名。

电量分析

最早能准确地测量出阿伏伽德罗常量的方法,是基于电量分析(又称库仑法)理论。原理是测量法拉第常数F,即一摩尔电子所带的电荷,然后将它除以基本电荷e,可得阿伏伽德罗常量。
国家标准技术研究所(NIST)的鲍瓦尔与戴维斯(Bower & Davis)实验在这一方法中堪称经典 ,原实验中电解槽的阳极是银制的,通电后银会“溶解”,实验中电量计所量度的就是这些单价银离子所带的电量,电解液为过氯酸,内含小量过氯酸银。设电流的大小为I,通电时间为t,从阳极中离开的银原子质量为m及银的原子重量为Ar,则法拉第常数为:
原实验中部份银原子会因机械性摩擦而脱落,而非通过电解,所以想通过银电极的消耗量来获得因电解而消耗的银原子质量m,就必须要解决摩擦造成的质量消耗问题,同时又不能大幅增加实验误差,为此NIST的科学家们设计出一种能补偿这个质量的方法:他们改在电解质中添加已知质量m的银离子,并使用铂制的阴极,银离子会在阴极上形成镀层,通过观测镀层来得知实验进程。法拉第常数的惯用值为F90= 96,485.39(13) C/mol,对应的阿伏伽德罗常量值为 6.022 144 9(78)×10²³ mol:两个数值的相对标准不确定度皆小于1.3×10⁻⁶。
