Coal gangue is the solid waste disposed during coal mining and washing, and is one of the largest industrial solid wastes in China. Large stock of coal waste not only takes up farmland, but also causes serious environmental pollution. Therefore, the treatment and effective use of the coal mining waste has become an urgent issue to be solved. The most popullar way for utilization of coal gangue is cement admixture. Due to the relatively lower activity of coal gangue, its effective utilization is limited, and to stimulate its activity is an effective measure to expand the use of coal gangue.
In this project, the thermal activation of coal gangue and the factors to affect its activity under different conditions are studied. The influences of calcination temperature, retaining time and cooling method on activation was studied. Analyses methods such as X ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (FTIR), active silica dissolution, and ash activity were used to thoroughly understand the activation prosess. The results show that best activation is achieved at the temperature of 700℃ and with a retention time of 2 hours and natural cooling.
