塑性材料处于比例极限和屈服极限之间时的状态称为“持豫”状态;单晶体材料没有此阶段,这是多晶体材料的几何效应所致。材料的比例极限又称为“弹性极限”;该点卸载后材料的应变消失;材料恢复到初始状态;工件的失效状态显然不是该点所致。屈服极限值是材料(工件)出现明显的塑性变形应力值,工件出限塑性变形(永久性变形)即告失效。所以选材料的屈服极限为工件失效应力值是合理的。

塑性材料处于比例极限和屈服极限之间时成为流动阶段或屈服阶段。特点是,应力在某数值范围内小幅变动,而变形逐渐增加。
因为屈服极限是塑性材料的强度指标,即使到达屈服极限,后面还有强化阶段,使结构有一定变形仍能保证安全使用。比例极限内材料只能满足弹性变形,无法实现塑性变形,外观上无法看出是否达到破坏程度。不能体现塑性材料的优势。
